The Joy of Girlfriends
Wednesday, January 19, 2005
I've been going through a rather difficult transition in my life lately and have been a little blue. So, what do I do? I have an impromptu shopping therapy session with my girlfriends, of course!
I forget sometimes how wonderful my girlfriends are, how, after all these years, we are changed yet still so much the same. I look around and we're these really amazing girls who have very cool, interesting lives and careers - all of us slowly and surely finding our place within society. For a split second, I see them as I first met them - fresh faced teenagers, in first year university, happy, laughing, defiant and without a care (oh Boutsy! you rebel).
I often wonder what we will be like when we're fifty. I have a feeling that we'll still be very much the same. My girlfriend Jen and I always joke around and say that if we ever lived in a retirement community, our roles would most likely play out like this - Jen and Syl running Craft Corner, Ra and Boutsy - entertainment, me - caterer. But I see us all still being friends at the end of the day. Because, despite the fact that we barely see each other due to our busy lives, whenever we do there always is a genuine love and fondness. They can still make me laugh despite everything.
Then I realize, all my worries and concerns about the next coming weeks and months don't really matter in the big picture. I just need to remember that if I fall, I always have this amazing group of girls who will be there to help me up.
