You've Got Mail

Last night, I watched You've Got Mail for the one hundredth time! No, I am sure that I haven't watched it that many times, but it sure feels like it. It's the type of movie (for me anyways) that you can watch it over and over again and you can never get sick of it.
I love the characters and The Shop Around The Corner (I have fantasies that I will one day own a cool little children's bookstore), but the thing I love the most is their relationship through emails. Looking back on it now, I think I was a little skeptical about the whole thing, as the movie was made at the very beginning of the email revolution. I mean, who can build a relationship via email? It's all so impersonal and instant.
I have always been a big believer of letters, especially hand written ones. There is nothing as exciting as seeing a letter, with a foreign stamp and familiar writing. You just want to drop everything and snuggle up on your comfy chair and just read that letter until it's done. I am always grateful that my friend, Ming (whom I've known since grade 4! That's a damn long time!) still tries to keep up the tradition, albeit we're both a little slow at responding.
This year, my friend Marie really changed my views of the validity of email relationships. Marie lives in Vancouver and I, in Toronto and we still don't know how or why, but for some reason we just started emailing each other incessantly for the past 6 months. And this movie always reminds me of her. It's gotten to the point where Stef has jokingly said he hates Marie, only because the minute I walk through the door I will greet him fleetingly while I run to check to see whether Marie had responded to my email. (Don't worry Marie, he really doesn't hate you.)
It's made me change my views about how you really can form or maintain a relationship through technology. I think in many ways, also, this is why I started this blog. To keep my many friends whom have been constant emailers to me (not I to them, I am so sorry, I promise I will try to get back to you faster in the future) in the loop with what's happening with me.
So to all my wonderful friends and family, who have kept up our relationship even when I haven't been as constant, thank you!
Happy Valentine's Day!
