Why I Don't Really Watch Movies With Other People

This is for Kevin who wants to know why. I am not a big movie watcher, I am a much more avid reader much to Stefan's everlasting disappointment. Either that or we're never in the same mood to watch the same things. It is the one thing that we will really fight about.

Come to think about it, it was one of the very first things we fought about when we first started dating. Stef wanted to watch a particular movie and I didn't, we both didn't want to compromise and we both ended up sulking.

I guess my moods just fluctuate quite a bit and often affect what I want to watch. I usually don't really like watching big blockbusters in theatres as I feel it's usually a waste of money and I can always just rent it. Usually the state of the world will affect my decision on whether I want to watch a movie or not. A lot of times, that will affect what I feel about TV shows as well. I don't see what is so gratifying about watching Tony Soprano killing a person when there is already so much death in the world.

However, I love going to the Toronto Film Festival and I look forward to it every year. I love watching things that might never ever make it to regular or widespread distribution. We usually get tickets every year. I love seeing movies that portray other people's perspectives of their lives in their part of the world. I love that it's usually unconventional/ non-commercial/ weird/ colourful/ just different.

So either way, I don't think I really answered Kevin's query. I just think in many ways I am a very solitary person, and I just want to be able to watch what I want to, when I want to. And unfortunately, it's never usually at the same time as anyone else and since I don't like to be a hindrance, I'd just rather see that movie on my own and discuss it later.

But Stef and I have found a way around our dilemna - we now take turns to pick movies and we both have to watch each other's picks. It usually works quite well and if the other really, really doesn't want to watch, they don't have to.
