Religion And Politics

Sunday, March 20, 2005

I am not sure whether everyone has been compelled to watch the Terri Schiavo case as I have been all weekend. There is something about this case that upsets and disturbs me profoundly that I felt that I needed to write about it. Usually I would stay away from something so political, as I get myself into enough hot water as it is with my opinions, but I need to say it because it will just eat at me if I don't.

I am a Christian, albeit not a practicing one in the eyes of the bible-thumping fanatics, but I consider myself one nonetheless. One of the many reasons why I left my particular church is because I did not condone many of its fanatical-almost hateful politics that many of the Christian right wing Americans exemplify today. I do not believe that my God or any other God, another religion worships could ever be so hateful.

That being said, I do not believe that religion should ever play any part in politics and goverment especially in a country as ethnically, religiously, and culturally diverse as the USA. They do not speak for all and in passing a bill that is so fueled by the Christian agenda simply opens doors to mass discrimination, misunderstanding and disharmony between the people.

In many ways, I believe that this whole bill is a way for the conservative government to further push their own political agendas and it has nothing to do with the needs of this poor woman who is caught in the middle of this swirling controversy and unfortunately will never have a say in what will eventually happen to her.

I cannot speak for the family members both on the parents side and on the husband's. I do not know what it is like to have to make that choice and I sincerely hope that I never will. What I do know is that a life with no real chance at a real life, i.e "persistent vegetative state" is no life at all. Another thing I do know is that I am thankful that all my family members are aware that should anything like that happen to me, whether it be illegal or not, they will help me find a way to end my life with dignity.
