Why White Men With Weird Hair Shouldn't Show People How To Cook Stir Fry

Monday, March 21, 2005

I just happened to be channel surfing where a show on the Food Network managed to catch my two second eye. I have never been a fan of the The Surreal Gourmet, and I think now more than ever, this guy should not have a TV show on how to cook food. Tonight, he was showing some girl how to cook a stir-fry. Since the stir fry has Asian origins, I usually find that white chefs don't really demonstrate how to do it very well. The few non Asian chefs (of the shows that I watch regularly) that have seemed to do Asian really well have been Guy Rubino, from Made to Order and the Domestic Goddess herself, Nigella Lawson.

I mean to be fair, he might be showing the public how to do the "white" version of it, but either way it was really bad. Here is what he did wrong -

His veggies looked like something that came from those premade veggie dips. (Gross, gross, gross. At least try to make your food look pretty!)

He made a sauce out of corn starch with water, brown suger and orange juice. (In my experience only non-Asians do this and let me tell you, it is so wrong. Just so wrong. I am so insulted by this sauce recipe that I can't even speak)

And the worst part is, he used shrimp out of shrimp cocktail. (Gross, Wrong, Disgusting and WHAT real chef uses anything but the fresh stuff? It probably takes less time to peel and butterfly the real deal than waiting for the shrimp cocktail to thaw out)

Anyways, this guy should just stick to his day job, which I am not sure what it is but it definitely should not be cooking, especially in front of an audience.
