What's A Little Spelling Mistake Between Friends?

Tuesday, April 19, 2005

So I am not sure whether I have mentioned my friend Lia yet on this site. I met Lia at the end of my serving career where I consciously made a decision to work at server-hell, aka Vinnie's. Vinnie's is where all servers go to die and resurrect themselves in their true calling or spiral into the abyss of serving-dom. Anyways, I think Lia and I started talking when I forced her to drive me home late one night when I discovered she lived really close to me.

We soon bonded in the ways that only people completely bored at their serving jobs can, through sharing food and drink and making up ridiculous games like "Flatter Butter" and "The Cutlery Grand Prix". Back then, Lia had a short do and her hair was completely black á la Astro Boy, hence her nickname, 'Astro'. (Hey man! I didn't come up with it, the kitchen crew did which was a heck a lot better than mine which was 'Picachu'.) I somehow changed her nickname to 'Star', but I don't really remember how or why. I think it was during one of our drinking binges.

Anyways, Lia and I, despite many changes in our lives and sometimes long periods of not talking, managed to stay friends and we go back to EXACTLY where we left off. I am so not joking when I say this - we'll end a conversation about someone and two months later we'll meet and it'll be like, "....so after she decided to dump that guy, she decides she loves him...".

It's super freaky but in a good way. I went on to the "fabulous" (err, not really, being totally sarcastic here) career of being a fashion fiend and Lia went to her equally "fabulous" career of being a graphic designer. All's well that ends well.

Until the day Lia decided to register her business name and stupidly enough decided to call me while she was in line and while I was completely distracted at work, to ask how to correctly spell the name "Asterisk" as that was the name she had decided on. And I, being a totally good friend and all, decided not to double check on the web to completely make sure of the correct spelling when I confidently said "A-S-T-E-R-I-X." Don't ask me why I was so confident, maybe too many Saturday mornings spent reading those Asterix and Obelix comics, but that was the spelling I had on my brain.

Not only did I, good friend and all, tell her it was the right spelling; I also was telling her how she could play on the letter "X", and make it "star-ish" (a play on her nickname). In fact, I thought I was pretty darn clever. UNTIL, she got home and double-checked and gave me the "Oh, Kar" in that disappointed voice, which let me tell you, coming from my friends, it's worse that any yelling you can inflict on me.

So, we have never spoken ever since.

JUST KIDDING!

Lia and I still hang, although every so often she likes to guilt trip me over it and we have a good laugh and go back to eating. In fact, she designed this masthead for me.

So, thanks Star!
