Tired & Homesick
Saturday, May 7, 2005
I have been on a whirlwind tour of the western part of our country and for those of you who don't live in Canada, it's a big ass country. It takes a long time to get from one place to another. In the time that it takes me to fly to Vancouver, it takes almost the same amount of time to go to London, England. New things I have discovered on this trip -
1. It is possible to sleep at the back of a cab for 15 minutes and feel like you've had an 8 hour rest.
2. It is amazing how your body can go on autopilot when it needs to. For example - like packing up all your samples at two in the morning, packing your own stuff up, remembering to charge the ipod, phone and blackberry, calling the front dest for a wake up call and not remembering in the morning that you did all that.
3. That there is such a thing as getting tired of eating out.
4. Every hotel room eventually looks the same.
5. You start thinking the hotel staff as your friends.
6. You can have intense, amazing, intellectual conversations with the unassuming cab driver who ends up having a bigger brain than anyone you know and has more degrees and languages under his belt than a genius.
7. You can find a way to transport all your bags when there is no porter in sight. It just takes a lot of strength, patience and endless mutterings of "mother-fucker."
8. You can almost weep at the mere taste of familiar food, such as Vietnamese noodle soup.
9. You can actually miss making your own bed and cleaning your own washroom.
10. You miss the darn cat's caterwauling in the night.
Vancouver has been lovely, (how could it not be with my Marie living in that fair city?), Edmonton was a pleasent surprise, (Went out with some clients who I discovered have hearts of gold, I'm honoured to be able to work with them), getting to Calgary was an experience (I got to ride on one those mini planes where the propellers are visible and you feel like you're about to crash every minute of the ride, except I fell asleep after ten) and I can't wait to see what else my trip brings me.
But I am ready for home and as much I hate the cramp of sharing the double bed with the giant and the fat cat, I cannot wait until I can say, "Can you move over? The cat needs more space!"
