The Downside Of Friendliness
Monday, May 9, 2005
You know how I always say that I am friendly to random strangers and Stefan is always cautioning me not to be and I always call him a cold fish? Well, I think this is the first time my friendliness has ever backfired on me. I was in a cab on my way to the hotel, doing my usual exchange of pleasantries when the driver asked me whether I liked my siblings. I replied that I did quite a lot, even though sometimes I think they can be Neanderthals.
That was when this grown man of forty or so in a very heavy Indian accent started sobbing, "My siblings are mean! They sold my property in India and they did not tell me until after they did it. I cannot understand how someone can be so mean! I pray God will make them suffer! I have been up all night crying, telling my wife and my child to never be so mean to another person! Especially not someone who is your blood."
I was just completely flummoxed! Talk about a heavy conversation for a fifteen minute cab ride!! I mean, how do you possibly react to something like that. I just clucked sympathetically and told him that karma would find a way to bite them in the ass for their unjustidfied deed.
After all, karma always seems to bite me in the ass when I do something bad. This is why the boy is always telling me not to talk to strangers.
