Entre Ses Mains (In His Hands)

Entre Ses Mains is wonderfully, drawn out psychological thriller that deals with the boundaries of right and wrong. The movie focuses on Claire, a young, vibrant woman who is in love with life, her husband and her child. She lives a very orderly and comfortable life as an insurance broker and her life is uncomplicated. This is all until she encounters Laurent, an enigmatic vet who has a flooded basement
For some reason, Laurent is extremely intrigued by Claire and she by him. They start off meeting, first to process the claim and after because they are inexplicably drawn to one another. Claire is an etheral being, her character full of lightness and laughter. Laurent is the opposite, somewhat brooding and moody. Her interactions with him causes her to start questioning her path of life.
Laurent starts revealing more of his murky past to her and the audience gets a sense that there is a certain darkness looming over both of them. As their relationship progresses, there is a certain outside threat that causes Claire to suspect that her new found friend might not be who he seems to be. There is a serial killer at large that the public has named "Dr. Death" because of the fact that he uses a scalpel, a fact that Laurent points out.
Anne Fontaine does a remarkable job of directing the two characters to draw the audience into this story. There is a certain tautness to both performances and the audience is always held on a very tight string. In the end, the story is about the meeting of two opposite characters, one light and dark and in the end points out that in every situation, there are always shades of grey. It is about love and how it can ultimately be your salvation.
