Holy Batman!

I know I've stated before that I don't really watch movies. I should clarify to say that I don't really watch a lot of movies in the theatre but I do tend to watch a lot of rented DVD's. Anyway, we finally watched the latest instalment of the Batman series, Batman Begins. I was a little hesitant to watch it simply because I am a big fan of comics. I grew up reading them and I often find the adaptation from paper to screen usually pretty disappointing. And let's be honest, the last few Batman movies, how shall we put this nicely? SUCKED SHITTY ASS.

This movie has restored all my faith in the whole comic-into-movie idea. First of all, the outstanding cast of Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Liam Neeson, Michael Caine, Cillian Murphy and Ken Watanabe made all the difference in the world. You noticed I left the only female star out. That's because I found Katie Holmes a little insipid in the role. I am not sure whether it was the writing or her acting, but her character left a quite a lot to be desired.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, (the incredibly talented director of Memento) the movie delves into the beginning of Bruce Wayne's transformation and personal struggle to become Batman. The movie is almost in two parts, the first half dealing with his assiduous physical and mental training in combat and the second half with the struggles of accustoming himself to the road he has chosen.

Superior physical acting by Liam Neeson, the old fart, who manages to look superbly imposing in his fighting scenes. Michael Caine brings a droll sensitiveness to his role as Alfred. But the huge chunk of the praise lies on Christian Bale. Remember Bale as the kid in Empire of The Sun? Or the bad kisser in Little Women (they really should have edited that saliva-trailing part or done a retake)? Or the bad, rich, white kid in Shaft? Or the nut in American Psycho? Not hot at all.

This movie? H-O-T! So hot, the screen is sizzling with his hotness. I am breaking into a sweat just thinking about how hot he is in this movie. And that's the beauty of it. He not only brings an incredible sexual tension to the screen unlike his predecessors but plays chilling, tortured, and confused to perfection. He manages to make Batman feel like a real man simply living up to his own expectations, and not like a weird cartoon character. At the end of the day, that's what those comic characters mean to a comic reader.
