How To Scare Americans
Wednesday, November 23, 2005
Last night, in order to avoid any encounter with the cleaning lady, I decided to meander to the Winners near my place. It's always such a great way to kill free time as there is so much to see and browse through. As always, I spend more time in the home section than in the clothing section. I am surrounded by clothes all the time, so why surround myself with more? I was enamored by all the pillow choices (those of you who know me, know very well that I LOVE tons of pillows on the bed) when a very confused and well dressed young man approached me.
Young Man: Erm.....what is the thing called that goes around the bed?
Silence and a look.
YM: You know....that's not a sheet. But goes to cover the bottom part?
"A bedskirt?," I offered.
YM: Yes!! Is that what they're called? Do they have them here?
I replied that they didn't but proceeded to offer several other great places for homeware. In between the suggestions and directions, I found out that he was an American who had just moved to Toronto in the last couple of days from San Francisco. I made some comment about how it's funny that he's here during our first cold snap.
YM: It gets COLDER?
Me: Ummm....yeah. Today was just the first little chill. It was about -1 Celcius? In February, it can drop to - 20 or so and with the wind chill factor, -35 to -40.
YM: But...it was really cold today.
He looked slightly sick at the prospect.
"You might want to buy sweaters...," I muttered as I eyed his very sparse outfit of a button down shirt, jeans and a light jacket.
I mean what was he thinking? This is Canada, where half of our land mass is covered in snow most of the year.
Silly boy.

That is so funny! Matt is in New York right now and I just finished this conversation with my parents (who are down in Singapore) that he had very little winter clothes and he was just going to stay in the office most of the time to keep warm.
