Mr. Darcy

Stefan thinks that he should be nominated for early sainthood as this was our second weekend in a row, watching yet another version of Pride and Prejudice. I keep wondering why I love the movies and book so much.
I love Jane Austen's works. Her observations of human nature, familial love and respect are all things that I can relate to. I read all of her works annually. Yes, I am a re-reader, a habit that many of my friends cannot understand. I say a favourite book is like comfort blanket that you never want to let go. Plus, I've always found, depending on my mood, that I always get a different feel from a re-reading.
Anyway, Mr. Darcy is one of my all time favourite heros in a love story. The complexity of his character has always appealed to me.
While watching the Keira Knightly version (not quite as good as the A&E version) this weekend, it dawned on me that Stefan is my Mr. Darcy.
I met Stefan when I was only eighteen years old. At first meeting, he was aloof, cold and unfriendly. I wrote him off as someone I would rather not know and never really thought of him again. But we kept on bumping into each other throughout the years, although he never really improved with each meeting. I hate to admit it but I think the reason why he never improved in my mind, was because I was too stubborn to see him as anything other than a git.
Needless to say, he changed my mind. He can be a bit distant at first meeting, because he's so incredibly polite to the point of awkwardness but it's because he's quite shy. Once you get to know him, he's so funny, kind and such a loyal friend. He's not one to wear his heart on his sleeve but when he does care for someone, it's very evident and it's quite special. Very Darcy-ish.
Now, if only "Darcy" traits also included washing the dishes when he's supposed to, then he would really be the perfect guy.
