Graffiti Art

Is graffiti art? We were having a lunch time discussion about it in school. Some people think it's defacing a property and some think that it's art.

I think it completely depends on where it is and what the context is. If it's some random tag on someone's beautiful home or store front, then it's definitely not cool. But if it's done in an area where the owner of the building is fine with it, graffiti can be a beautiful thing.

There is an alleyway near where I live that is filled with graffiti art and I love it. It takes up over 5 blocks and for me, it's an art gallery in a sense. It always changes and the colours are always so vibrant. I love that every summer, at a large parking lot near Graffiti Alley, a city group organizes a skateboarding and graffiti art showcase. It's a great way for people to understand the culture. I think it's important to have because it shows people that there are alternative ways to be creative.

I took this picture as part of my last installment of colour week. You can see the rest of the back alley gallery on my flickr account.

I'm a writer and i have to agree and inpart disagree with what you just said. In my view as an artist graffiti is always art, no matter when or where it is done. Now i'm not saying i agree with people doing it on private property where people don't want it, but that doesn't stop it being art.
I hope i didn't sound to affrontive there heh...

Oooo such a good topic Karen, and one we debated to death at art school!

I reckon Graffiti is amazing and that it IS art!...but also feel that it is absolutley unacceptable to deface other people's property, in whatever way. I think it should only ever be done on waste land, or on specified graffiti walls...and anything apart from that is vandalism and a complete disregard for other peoples rights. After all...no one comes along and pops an oil painting on your shop window...I think by doing this, many graffiti artists actually do their cause so much more harm than good by alienating people through anger and frustration. I can't imagine how annoyed I would be.....!

My folks work in a bank, and people come and tag the windows with paint, and with glass cutters..meaning the window paines have to be replaced..at 11,000 a pop...not on really?! regardless of how good the 'art' is..no one ends up receiving it in a good way, when it comes with all this baggage....
