Long Easter Weekend
Monday, April 17, 2006

There is nothing like a long weekend to totally rejuvenate the work weary soul.
Stefan and I went up to our friends Kevin and Adrienne's cottage this weekend with Mags and Rich. We were joined by a bunch of other family friends. It's not really a cottage as one would imagine a typical Ontario cottage to be. It's actually Kevin's grandad's farm from ages ago and the "cottage" is a fully functioning second home for his parents. So, there was no real "roughing" it so to speak. Regardless, we were so glad to be away from the bright lights and smog.
Good friends and food make for good times.
Things that I learnt this weekend -
Maple syrup takes a bloody long time to make. We were watching three huge pots of syrup cook for over 12 hours (I was only entertained with playing with fire for four of those twelve hours) and the end result was a tiny little jug. Now, whenever I see those expensive prices in the supermarket, I will gladly pay the price because I understand the struggle and the sweat!
Richie is a damn good cook. He works in the family biz of catering for the people on movie sets being shot in Toronto. He was cooking us some serious gourmet meals out of nothing. It was so good. Those movie people are damn lucky.

Stefan and Richie are definitely not as outdoorsy as Kevin. Kevin is Mr. Environment and can wield any form of hard machinery. The boys were helping Kevin with some fallen trees that a beaver created near the stream while building its dam. Kevin used the chain saw and the boys were stuck with dragging the cut wood.
Murdock, the family dog has by far the stinkiest farts out of all three boys combined. He about killed us with his smells this weekend.
