The Last Days Of Summer
Wednesday, August 2, 2006

We were at the cottage again last weekend. It's always so nice to get away from the city. It's been such a disgustingly hot, humid summer. For me, this is probably my last "hurrah" at the cottage for the summer as I am just about to start my crazy-busy time at work. I was so happy to be able to spend it away and with some lovely friends. Maureen and I went up early on Friday and the boys came to meet us after the footy game.
Ironically, it was rainy pretty much all day Saturday until the boys (and some girls) showed up. I was lucky enough to be allowed to prepare the meal for the twenty people up there. To some, it may be a daunting task but for me, I've never managed to figure out how to cook for less than 5 people and am always left with leftovers. This is the first time where I managed to get my portions just right and there were no leftovers.
Big meals always remind me of my childhood summers with my cousins in Asia. I really miss them the most during this time and holidays. It's weird to not see them and be with them.
Being at the cottage with 20 people, mainly Aussies, will lead to ridiculousness. The boys came up with various shenanigans like "how many people can we fit on the love dock" to "who can stay up the latest?". I think at some point the boys had even come up with a synchro swim that was pretty dismal. One of the couples had not seen each other for two weeks prior and kept on being teased mercilessly every time they disappeared.
We didn't want to leave mainly because we didn't want to go back to the city but also because we knew that the drive home was going to be long. All five of us were packed into a small car (some of the rides had left earlier, leaving us with the last load) and had bags piled on our laps. You know you're with good friends when you can be packed like sardines in a tin can, for two and a half hours and still laugh all the way home.
