NY & ICFF

Sunday, June 8, 2008

So much for trying to post more often. I just cannot get into the swing of posting regularly. I think one of the reasons for my writer's block is simply because for the longest time, I refused to blog about anything relating to work. Which makes it very hard since I am a workaholic and many of my really interesting moments happen during work or while I am thinking about work. I had mentioned this dilemma to Lisa S, who was convinced that somehow I would find a way.

And so here I am, finding my way.

I was in New York this past month attending the ICFF. I don't know what it is but I just love going to exhibition shows. There's a certain energy and buzz about attending ones that have interesting products and ideas that you just can't get from reading a magazine or blog. It also has to do with being in NY itself.

What Is Your Look This Season?

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

This is one of my very favourite questions to ask Marie at the start of every fashion season. She always responds with "You are retarded!" and "Who plans what their look will be every season?" You see why we're best friends. We have no issues with abusing one another.

Fashion is such a funny thing.

I do think there are many people in the world who do plan their wardrobes seasons ahead. I however, am not really one of them, I kind of just buy what I feel like. I do have a couple of pet peeves when it comes to fashion:

(1) Having no personal fashion identity -- you know the girls I am talking about. The ones who travel in packs and wear variations of the same thing, and the ones who look as if they ripped a page out of a magazine, went to a store and told the salesperson to get them "the look" regardless of whether the clothes complement their body type or personal taste.

(2) Taking fashion too seriously. At the end of the day, it's only clothes, people should have fun with it.

So when I ask Marie the question, part of it is mocking the silliness of the industry. My answer is usually something really random like "Marie Antoinette mixed with 90's grunge and 20's flapper girl" and we'll laugh. Then Marie will swear she won't be seen near me if I come close to dressing what I described above.

Coveting

blogcovet1.jpg
I've been meaning to start this category for quite awhile now but have not had much time. A small selection of my friends used to get an email weekly of random links. Usually, they consisted of miscellaneous things that I would covet (definition: to wish for longingly) or thought that they were items that they would also find appealing. It was time to finally post this because, frankly, my bookmarks were getting a little ridiculous.

These are just a smattering of things that have caught my eye in the past little while...

1. I bought one of these flasks by Shinzi Katoh for Marie for Christmas. Check out the rest of this designer's products. If I could, I would seriously buy almost every single thing they have listed on the site.

2. I feel like every year, I ask the hubby for one of Abigail's gorgeous works. I think the hubby refuses to get me any more jewelry as he's always putting them away. I have the very bad habit of just taking off my jewelry and leaving them where I took them off. But I'm thinking, if I ask VERY publicly, he'll actually get it for me...

3. I don't know what it is about these cute, random people by Meredith Dittman that captivates me. But captivate me they do.

4. Toronto Life magazine had a great issue about design in Toronto. Coe & Waito was one of the featured designers. You know my bird love, there's something about the clean line of the bowl with the one quirky print that gets me.

5. This was actually one of the things I wanted to get for Marie for her shelf from one of my all time favourite shops. But it feels like every box I send her, there's some sort of bird thing and I didn't want her to think I was completely cuckcoo (even though I probably am).
